Questions And Answers
Question by Headless Chicken!!: Camping with a baby question?
Hi there, we take regular camping trips and are planning to go at the weekend. This time is slightly different as we are taking our 4 1/2 month old son aswell. Before it was just me, hubby and our 6yr old. I am concerned what to dress him in for his nightime sleep as normally we are in a comfortable draught free house and we will now be outside in a canvas tent (albeit a nice one). Sister says firstly to look at weather forecast then prob vest, sleepsuit and cardigan and then his normal blankets. also a hat as babies lose heat through their heads. What do you reckon, he sleeps really well at night and would really like this to continue both for him and for me!!
Cheers.

I would bundle him up as much as you are going to bundle up. If you would be too hot in a sleepsuit, cardigan, blankets and a hat then he probably will be too.

I’d say put a core layer or two on – maybe two vests or a long and a short test and socks and booties. I know I get chilly camping in a tent, so make sure he’s got a lot on – without having the pile blankets on him. Good luck camping – it’s an adventure with a baby!
It might be best to share a sleeping bag with your son depending on your level of comfort. Otherwise just use your best judgement and check his temperature (I assume he goes to be at least an hour before you)
dress him the same as your 6 yr old dresses, we are a large family 5 kids, and we are always camping , we love it, don’t worry, babies love it too, don’t overdress, just dress for the weather same as your older son
Our doctor has always told us dress your baby as you would dress. If you are comfortable in a room wearing shorts and a t-shirt your baby would be to. We took our 5 month old camping on a nice weekend and she just wore a sleeper and did great! It just depends on the weather…
Just trust your instincts!! Probably his t-shirt, and a footed blanket sleeper ( plus his regular blankets )will be enough . You do not want him to be overly warm, as that is not good either. Since you are both accustomed to the same temperature in your home- just go by what you think- if you are chilly, he probably is also, same goes for too warm. What did you do with your 6 year old when you went camping?
I would put a onesie, socks, and a wearable sleeper blanket on him along with a hat and possibly one more blanket on top of him.
We began tent camping with our children when our oldest was only 3 weeks old. None of our children were too good at staying covered with blankets at night – all sound, but restless sleepers – so we always layered their clothing. Generally for nights that will likely be chilly, we’d start with diaper, socks, long sleeved undershirt. After that we’d put on regular pajamas and then add a heavy footed blanket sleeper. Body heat does escape through the head for all people and not just babies. A knitted stocking hat is a good idea for a baby when sleeping on chilly nights inside a tent. We invested in a small propane space heater for our tent and placed it near our babies’ sleeping space . We used a porta-crib with a quilted mattress pad under the sheet for added insulation. covered with a blanket and a quilt they’d stay toasty warm. On those inevitable occasions (especially in spring and fall camping) when the night time temperature dipped pretty low, we’d snuggle the little ones in our sleeping bag for extra warmth, but normally, they were fine. All of our babies slept very well at night when we camped due to being active and out in the fresh air all day long! We love camping and are looking forward to our weather turning a bit more warm and heading out soon ourselves.
